Holi, or Fagu Purnima

Holi is a festival of color, a week or merriment and playful pranks, like Carnival or Halloween. On the first day the ceremonial chir pole, hung with tiers of colored flags, is erected in Kathmandu's Durbar Square.

This festival was started to be celebrated in happiness of death of devil woman Holika.

The pole celebrates the tree which playful Lord Krishna once climbed, carrying the saris he stole from milkmaids bathing in the river Yamuna. The colored flags represent the saris fluttering in the breeze. Throughout the week and especially on the last day, crowds or youths roam about, pelting everyone with red powder and balloons of colored water.

Teenage girls respond by flinging colored missiles from balconies and rooftops. Visitors are welcome victims to the fun as well-so on the last day either watch from your window if you're wearing your best clothes, or put on an old T-shirt and come out and join the fun.
